Summer Camp

Come to The Studio School’s Summer Camp, where children
ages 2 to 10, find adventure and discovery.
Summer Camp will run from June 14 through July 23, 2010.
Morning Fun: For 2 – 3 year olds
Our youngest campers love to frolic and splash in the sprinklers and kiddie pools in the sunny outdoor yard. Campers delight in being gardeners and seeing what is growing in the planters. Inside, they explore and create with paint, music, blocks, books, games, cooking, and more. In the gym, they bounce, run, tumble, and roll. A parent or caregiver comes at the beginning of the session, to help the camper settle with her/his counselors. A healthy morning snack is served.
Outside In: For 3 – 5 year olds
Our young explorers begin each day outside: Playing kickball in Central Park, fishing for golden shiners in the Harlem Meer, and more. In our outdoor Water Exploratorium, they can float, sink, splash, pour, slip and slide, and sprinkle. After a morning outside, they come in to sing, read stories, and create in our Summer Studio. A fishing trip prompts the construction of bamboo fishing poles, or a skit starring golden shiners, or a series of paintings set underwater. A morning trip to a museum or zoo leads to making dioramas and building animal habitats. A visit to a farm leads to making puppets. A breezy park visit suggests sailboats and kites. Campers bring their own lunches; nutritious snacks are served throughout the day.
Inside Out: For 6 – 10 year olds
Calling all painters, sculptors, builders, designers, actors, and scientists! Begin your mornings inside our Summer Studio, pursuing innovative investigations in visual and performing arts, architecture, natural sciences, and sports. In the afternoons, take your visions outdoors to conduct fun-filled field research for your projects. A stop-motion or claymation movie project inspires campers to snap photos in Central Park, and to view the Isamu Noguchi Sculpture Garden and an animation exhibit at MoMA. Planting a vegetable garden leads to outdoor farmers’ markets, and to Central Park’s Conservatory Garden to capture the beautiful flowers in watercolors. An investigation of animal behavior takes campers to the zoo, where you sketch the animals or observe a giraffe’s behavior for a performance piece. At the end of each session, welcome family and friends to an exhibit highlighting the work and pleasure of your Summer Studio experience.
Swimming lessons, twice a week at an indoor pool, are a refreshing way for campers to splash and improve their stroke. Campers bring their own lunches; nutritious snacks are served throughout the day.
